Hana knotted the second red streamer onto the kite’s tail, two bright strips still loose and flapping beside her wrist. Warm air carried crushed-grass perfume around her ankles and a distant honey whiff from yellow gorse further down the ridge. Owen crouched nearby, his snack bag open, the floury smell of biscuits drifting between the half-finished knots. A faint metallic tang from the reel’s axle mixed with warming plastic, reminding Hana of playground chains on cold mornings. They planned to launch the diamond kite, patterned with twinkling stars. Sunlight formed an opalescent glow along its coated fabric. Hana tugged the reel; a lot of line jerked forward until a hidden cross-wrap jammed the handle. She had checked the spool earlier, yet the overlap had been hidden beneath coils and escaped notice. Hana pulled harder to transform the knot into sliding layers, yet tension drove the strands deeper against plastic edges.

A sharp side gust slapped the loose tail pieces, pitching the half-readied kite from Hana’s grip and yanking the line across grass. Its colourful shadow skimmed the turf and startled a grazing ewe, whose earthy wool carried pungent barn odor into the moving air. The ewe bolted uphill, brushing a thistle; seeds burst with dusty smell and showered crickets hiding below. Startled by the seed rain, the crickets sprang outward like popping corn, one springing straight into the snagged line and clinging there. The tiny weight tipped the slack segment, loosening the jammed coils as Owen’s reel rolled toward his drawings. Owen dropped his pencil with a selfless grunt of surprise and planted a boot on the plastic rim, stopping the runaway spool.

The line, now smooth between her fingers, carried a faint chemical whiff where plastic warmed under friction. If the breeze veered again, the freed kite would soar beyond the treetops and test the weakened knot in mid-air. A cool, earthy smell drifted from freshly turned soil where Owen’s boot had scraped the turf during his quick stop. Hana leaned back, elbows locked, while the diamond climbed, tail ribbons unfastened and flickering upward.

哈娜的指間現在感到一股塑膠因摩擦而升起的淡淡化學氣味。如果風向再轉，脫困的風箏就會越過樹梢，高空考驗那段變弱的結。歐文靴底剛剛刮出的翻土味涼涼地飄來。哈娜向後仰身，手肘伸直，那菱形風箏不停上升，未繫好的尾帶在空中閃動。
