Rough granite rasped against Reese’s palm, and a smeared paw print glistened where damp stone met the puddle’s edge. A herring gull watched from the nearest bollard, its neck tilted as though judging the curious trace.
Reese crouched beside the weighing station, letting an autumn breeze skate over his jacket and sway the hanging scale. The pointer jerked left, then right; the gusts made the pan misalign each time. Two older deckhands nearby exchanged blown-out laughs, their voices rising like a spirited debate carried by salt air. Reese waited for the lull, but his foot began to falter on the wet surface and he had to place a knee down before he could stumble. He steadied himself, slid the half-full crate of silver-grey mackerel onto the pan, and shielded the dial with his shoulder. The pointer hovered, finally honest.
A tug on the rope below drew his attention. The crate’s weight had pinned the mooring line beneath the pan’s frame; the small boat rocked harder, the rope stretched, and a low creak rolled across the quay. The gull fluttered down, tapping the trapped line as if urging haste. Reese exhaled, lifted the crate just enough for the rope to slip free, but the sudden shift sent fish sliding and the scale threatened to tip. He angled the crate, allowing one corner to rest on the steel rim; half the catch remained steady while the other half leaned precariously, water dripping through slats. Outcome imperfect, yet workable—the rope now clear, the weight recorded, fish still inside. Below, the boat’s hull knocked once in approval. Reese straightened, eyes tracing the fading paw print, then stepped toward the clipboard chain, his right hand already holding the swaying crate in place.
