English 원문
One square slab was gone from the circle around the fountain, leaving a bright patch of packed sand that felt like a small vacuum among the warm stones. Wyatt crouched and traced the neat ring with his fingertip, counting how the gap broke the twelve-slab pattern beneath the spilling water whose kinetic energy sent ripples of amber light across the pavement. He spread a thin page over the nearest slab, pressed a stub of charcoal against it, and rubbed. Mist drifted sideways; the page soaked, a thin tear split from corner to center, and the charcoal smear blurred into grey fog. Wyatt set the ruined sheet aside.
Wyatt rose and walked toward the shady bench arc where Finn angled a camera at the middle basin. Confetti had been scattered across the plaza earlier; now small pink and cream pieces—left from a wedding party—fluttered against the warm pavement. A breeze pushed them into motion until one fragment lodged against his shoe. He flicked it away, then counted the pigeons forming a loose line near the rim: nine, then ten when a late bird glided in. Finn lowered his lens, and their eyes met for an instant of mutual understanding about waiting for the pump to slow again. The quarter-hour chime drifted over, its echo doubled by the nearest wall. Wyatt paced toward the path entrance, tapping each sun-heated slab and noticing how every step crossed a new curtain of warmth.
On the way back, he found his sketchbook still propped against the missing slab, a breeze having flipped open its final blank page. The cascades had eased; the lower pool lay quiet, and the mist held back. Without planning, Wyatt knelt, set the page over the sun-dried stone, and tried once more. His hand moved lighter this time, letting the surface guide the charcoal instead of forcing it. A clean imprint blossomed. He lifted the page as the pump gears rumbled and spray returned. The charcoal nub gave one last streak and crumbled to dust against the stone edge.
