English 원문
Only half the books needed to raise the middle ramp were stacked, leaving the cardboard tube hanging at an awkward downward angle. Grant knelt on the warm patch of carpet, fingers sliding over the glossy, slightly slippery covers while a pocketful of glass marbles clinked against his leg. A worn hardcover lay on top, but its smooth jacket offered little grip, and the whole platform trembled each time he breathed on it. Farther back, an adult—Cyrus—had been cutting fresh tubes; a measuring tape trailed across the floor beside him, its metal edge cool to the touch. Grant eased a thin paperback under the wobbling stack, hoping to lift the tube just enough. The marble rattled through the straight section, but as it reached the half-supported zone the unsteady pages compressed, and the ball rolled backward, stopping in the seam. For a moment the entire run stood in jeopardy, the loose tape joints creaking softly under the shifting weight.
Before Grant could try again, Oona the cat padded in, her waxy nose twitching at the papery scent of the tubes. One curious paw pressed against the lowest block; the stack slid on the slick cover and the tilted tube sagged further. Strategy A—adding height—had failed, yet Cyrus remained busy, so Grant needed a different rhythm rather than new tools. He waited until Oona crouched beside the radiator, then timed his movements with her stillness. First, he pinched the marble between two fingers, its surface cold from the shaded carpet. Next, he peeled the loosest tape, aligned the tube during a silent breath, and only then placed a thicker hardback beneath, leaning his elbow to keep every layer steady until gravity settled. Oona stretched; Grant paused. Her paw withdrew; he pressed the last strip of tape across the joint, smoothing the ridges with the side of his thumb. The marble shot down, clattered through the turn, and rang inside the metal bowl just as the tape roll ran bare and the cardboard core bounced free on the carpet.
