Clap, clap, clap—water slapped the wooden paddles as Soren stepped onto the sun-warmed stone beside the channel. Rubber boots darkened where spray landed, and he unfolded a rolled blueprint he had tucked behind his belt: simple sketches showing how much flow the garden required. A lazy green gecko basked on the ochre wall, and a bright parrot perched on the bench where his parent read, its feathers catching amber light. Soren’s goal was plain: feed enough water to the irrigation outlet without slowing the wheel. He shoved the first sluice board upward. The swollen plank groaned, moved a finger’s width, then stopped; the wheel’s rhythm hardly changed, and the garden trickle stayed thin. Facing the music of those uneven claps, he planted both palms lower and pushed again. Moist wood slipped; only a shallow surge reached the wheel, and leaf fragments drifted back toward the paddles, hinting that something downstream still stole energy.
Soren wiped water from the handle notch and tried a firmer stance, yet the board refused to travel further. Recalling the small tin beside the rake, he tugged it free; the lid shifted, and the sudden tilt made him spill the beans across the honey-colored stones. A few beans slipped into the current, drawing whirling loops halfway to the wheel. Their spinning paths exposed a sunken pocket stealing force. While the gecko pounced on a stranded bean and the parrot bobbed its head, Soren used the rake to scoop sodden leaves from that hollow. The wheel sped up, but the board still wavered. He dipped two fingers into the leftover grease—the axle had been serviced last month, so plenty remained—and smeared a thin line down each groove. With that extra slide, he leaned in again, pressing at a lower angle. The plank yielded another hand’s width, redirecting a warmer rush toward the paddles while Soren kept pressing, boots firm against the rust-stained stone.
