"Hold the pan steady," Ben murmured.

He rested the dark metal disk on a sun-warmed rock, the amber creek light sliding across its ridged surface like thin caramel. A terrier padded near the water, nose twitching at every honey-colored splash. Ben had already removed the thumbnail-sized stones; only damp sand and a rumbling stripe of black magnetite remained. He dipped the pan just enough to quench the grains, then began a slow swirl. The current pressed harder along the downstream rim and dragged pale silt away in a milky ribbon, yet heavy sand clung to the inner grooves. A single glittering chip flashed briefly. Ben eased the pan onto the grading table, tweezers ready. Under the lens, the flake dented under his fingernail — gold, not the brittle edge of pyrite. The first piece drifted into the vial, still too small to cross the faint line scratched halfway up the glass.

Ben returned to the rock. A gust upriver thickened the flow; clouded ochre water blurred the ridges, forcing him to pause until the haze settled. He restarted, letting each circular motion revitalize the separation. Three minutes passed before a second bright spot appeared, nestled beneath a curved ridge like an island inside cooling magma. Again he tested: no pull from the magnet, yellow streak on the ceramic, another soft dent. Two flakes floated in the vial now, but light barely caught them. He gathered the remaining black grains into one corner of the pan and tipped the edge almost flat. The water crept over the rim; grain by grain the magnetite slipped away. A final spark stayed behind. The moment it joined the others, the surface of the vial shifted; the trio formed a tiny gold crescent that finally crossed the threshold and shone clearly when he raised the glass toward the sun.

Ben closed the vial and slipped it into a pocket. At the same moment, a pigeon on the railing above fluttered down, landed beside an abandoned pan, and tapped the empty rim with its beak.

班回到岩石。上游一陣風使水變濁；赭色波紋掩住槽線，他只得等渾濁平息。再度旋盤時，每一次圓周動作都像重啟分層。三分鐘後，第二點亮光出現，貼在槽邊，像冷卻熔岩中的小島。他再次測試：磁鐵不動、陶板留黃痕、指甲可壓痕。瓶裡已有兩片，卻仍難見。班把剩餘磁鐵砂掃到盤角，幾乎水平地傾盤。水沿邊緩緩溢出，砂粒一顆顆滑走，最後一片金屑留了下來。當它與前兩片合而為一時，瓶中水面微微變形；三片細金排成新月，終於越過那道分界，在陽光下清晰閃耀。

班闔起瓶塞，放入口袋。就在同一刻，上方欄杆上一隻鴿子撲通降落，在一隻被遺忘的盤子旁，喙輕敲空蕩的盤緣。
