Her mother browsed seed bags at the supply shelf while Tess crouched beside the display cages, intent on spotting the hamster with the cream patch. A warm lamp hung above the bedding; its steady heat had softened the glass front so that each of Tess’s breaths left a quick fog. Inside the neighboring aquarium aisle, a ceramic lighthouse and a tiny clay lantern rested on pale gravel against a painted estuary backdrop. The cool water pressed a chill through the tank wall, yet the lamp’s glow brushed Tess’s knuckles with gentle warmth, setting up an unnoticed contrast that waited to shift.

A clear bead gathered where warm air met the cooler pane, slid down, and tapped the edge of the blue tag. The card had been printed on stiff stock, but the droplet soaked one corner; that corner curled, loosened, and fell. The light sheet fluttered like a leaf, landed on the hamster wheel below, and the wheel jolted just enough to squeak. Startled by the sudden motion, one hamster poked its nose up, wood shavings falling from its whiskers. Tess caught the tag before it could sink deeper into the bedding, then propped it against the glass with the dry side outward, stopping more moisture from reaching it. The hamster’s cream patch flashed between shavings, solving the mix-up, while the other remained curled in untroubled reverie. From the doorway, the stacked cages shrank to a slim rectangle of wire and glass, and a single silver droplet still inched down the pane toward the floor.
