A damp gossamer thread lay abandoned across the carved cherry block, its twist darker than the surrounding ridges. Kent paused, fingertip hovering above the thread, and Ella’s reflection trembled on the glass slab where green ink waited. The succulent design beneath the thread—arched stems dotted with thick leaves—stood reversed, every ridge a promise of deep colour. Kent brushed the air above the block instead of touching, then turned the brayer once; the roller’s tack broke the quiet.

Ink spread in a thin film, yet the wandering thread threatened to catch pigment and blur the leaves. Kent set the brayer aside and lifted the corner of a small canvas pouch; its weight had steadied damp paper earlier, but moving it freed the thread to drift again. Ella, reaching for crimson, nudged the glass, and the green film thinned faster than expected. Solving the stray-thread problem exposed a second one—drying ink—because each second without rolling formed a skin the brayer could not lift cleanly. Kent exhaled through pursed lips, rolled fresh ink anyway, and watched it envelop the raised stems until valleys shone bare. The trace that looked like debris now printed as a midrib line, sharper than any gouge could cut.

Paper came forward, aligned by Kent’s fingertips against shallow registration notches; Ella steadied the far edge with a wrist. The baren circled, slow first, then firmer, and jubilant yellow from the earlier layer glimmered faintly through the fresh green at overlaps. Halfway through, Kent hesitated, remembering the pouch still missing from its corner post. He slid it back, accepting a slight shift in alignment rather than risking the ink’s skin returning. When the sheet peeled free, the leaves appeared whole, the once-wayward thread now a vein that breathed life into every blade. Outside, dusk pooled over the courtyard, and Kent slid the wet print onto the line.
