English 원문
Three cast-iron hooks revolved slowly on the hand-crank frame, each blackened tooth gripping a loose bundle of pale hemp.
Slanted daylight made a smart grid of bright rectangles across the oak floor, sliding over the strands without altering their straw-dull colour.
Basil’s boots skimmed those rectangles as he stepped back, letting the fibres run through his left palm while his right hand coaxed another quarter-turn from the handle.
The air tasted of dried grass and a faint salty note that clung to his lips like brine on driftwood.
Another pinch joined the twist; nothing on the rope’s surface showed the addition, and the ratchet ticked once, indifferent.
Dust from the combing board drifted toward him, settling on his tongue with chalky bitterness that recalled rocky terrain ground to powder.
He added a further scoop, then another, relying on a cognitive approach rather than speed, weighing each tuft against the warmth already stored in the tightening wave.
The system absorbed every input; the rope looked unchanged, though the creak lifted half a note while the floorboards murmured beneath balanced steps.
Mae stood at the shed’s open end, rolling a finished coil, and asked, “Still smooth?”
Basil pressed his tongue to his teeth, tasted linseed oil, and answered with a nod that let another few inches slide under tension.
Mid-stride, he paused; the next tuft clung stubbornly to the forming strand, its fibres fanning instead of melting inward.
He thumbed the spot, feeling sudden grit against the twist, and a metallic taste jumped to the back of his mouth as if the rope had spoken through skin.
One more turn of the crank and the three strands met with audible synergy, snapping into a single helix that shivered along its length.
The surprise struck like a soft drumbeat—seconds earlier the rope drank every offering, now the surface pushed back, ridged and alive.
He shifted weight, chose to continue rather than unpick the crest, and walked backward again, slower, measuring the new resistance.
At the fifty-metre mark, he set the final tuft aside on a dilapidated stool.
Dust drifting off the seat reached his tongue and carried a stale varnish flavour.
He loosened his grip, palms tingling where warmth had built, and let the finished rope sag a handspan before the ratchet caught.
Mae’s footsteps slowed, yet the hooks kept turning on momentum, the high note of twisted fibre hovering like steam above warm bread.
Outside, wind crossed the door, and the rope’s new helix hummed, holding its tune after their voices fell.
