English 원문
The clay bowl's rim felt velvety, though the glaze on its sides flashed like still water. In the shelf dust, a thin ring traced where another base had turned and gone. Voices overlapped in soft waves; small cups kissed a metal tray at the tea-tasting stand; a far bell pinged. His grandparent, Glynis, tilted a tall vase; a gentle tone rose when her nail brushed its lip. Glynis leaned closer and said, "That note carries well across these canvas roofs today, Niles." Niles was tempted to tap the bowl, and he did, sending a steady ring that threaded through the lane. Beyond the awning, a steady drip touched stone near the small square, ticking beside a mossy bench.
A delivery cart clanked across the lane, the vendor stepped into the back to restock, and two low boxes were drawn inward. He and his companion waited by the bubble‑wrap station; bowls gave brief tremors, then settled. Niles set the bowl in a cardboard box and lifted it an inch to listen. He meant to quiet that rattle before the aisle opened and the cart creaked away. He tucked one folded square around the curve and tried again; the knock softened but still counted beats. A second square under the foot thinned it to a stray click that paused, then returned. A third strip at the rim ended it at once; the lift brought only a soft crinkle. He brushed the shelf ring with his knuckle; it smeared into pale powder from the bowl's unglazed foot.
The cart clanked forward, and the lane filled again with rolling chatter and the soft clap of sandals on gravel. Glynis looked at the boxed bowl and said, "It's quiet now, like a held breath." At the square beyond, a fallen leaf had begun to moulder near the bench, and a new drop tapped its skin. Niles lowered the box, then reached to the shelf where his earlier wipe had cleared a pale circle in the dust. The cleaned patch made the row look brighter, and he set the wrapped bowl inside that bright ring.
