Soft morning light entered the town hall.

Lewis carried a folded blanket over one arm.

Thick wool gloves filled his coat pockets.

He placed the blanket across his knees because the floor stayed cold.

He wanted the small wooden boat on today’s auction list.

The boat once sat in his grandfather’s workshop window.

Lewis sat near the front and held his numbered paddle.

A courageous girl raised the first paddle for a colorful painting.

The clerk called prices, and chairs creaked after each loud question.

When the wooden boat appeared, Lewis leaned forward with care.

His right glove caught on the blanket and pulled it sideways.

The blanket slid off his knees, nudged his neighbor’s elbow, and flipped.

The neighbor’s paddle shot upward, catching the auctioneer’s sharp attention.

A bell rang, and the boat sold; the neighbor’s eyes widened.

Lewis blinked, then noticed a heavy metal lamp without any bid.

He lifted his paddle quickly, and the lamp became his instead.
