Nội dung truyện
English Bản gốc
Amber and Luis reached the lip of the narrow canyon just after midday. Wind pushed warm air upward, carrying a faint smell of sage and dust. Ten meters below, their small survey drone lay against a pale rock, its rotors still. The sandy slope between them and the drone looked loose, shining like powdered chalk under the sun. Amber uncoiled a rope and checked an authentic metal carabiner that had been fixed to one end during last week’s field workshop. Their goal was simple: bring the drone back before more dust clogged the motors.
Luis tossed the rope downward, yet the line stopped several steps short of the target. He had already knotted the free end around a stubborn juniper root, but the gap remained. Amber searched the ground, found a fallen branch as thick as her wrist, and jammed it sideways into the slope for leverage. The surface crumbled and slid, forcing both cousins to jump back. While they brushed sand off their boots, a shaggy bison calf wandered into view from a shadowed alcove, its dark coat speckled with yellow seeds. The animal paused, breathing quietly, unaware of the drone or the dangling rope. Farther off, an adult bison shifted behind a curtain of willow leaves. The cousins kept still until the calf stepped across a patch of grass and disappeared behind a ridge.
The slope had changed; a fresh channel now cut through the sand where the calf’s hooves had dragged. Amber tied a second rope to the first, the junction wrapped tight with the branch like a makeshift spindle. Extra length gained, Luis lowered himself carefully, knees bent, boots pressing sideways to spread weight. He reached the drone, brushed grit from its casing, and slipped it into a canvas bag. Beside the drone lay a small bead carved from bone; the surface looked weathered yet precise, almost ceremonial. He took the bead too and climbed back. When they stepped away from the rim, fine dust hung in the quiet air above the disturbed sand.
