Nội dung truyện
English Bản gốc
Tara shoved her wicker-lined cart through a knot of shoppers, the wooden wheels jolting against uneven stone. A pelican swooped low and skimmed the bright awnings, its wing tips flicking loose ribbons before it perched on the damp rim of a fish barrel. Water from melting ice cooled Tara's wrist when she steadied the barrel’s lip. The bird’s throat pouch moved like soft leather, and its webbed feet pressed against the slimy slats. The stall owner had stacked fresh mackerel inside, their slippery skin shining like hammered tin. Along the lane, an ancient chapel rose behind the stalls; dark timber doors stood half-open beneath a chipped ridge of roof tile. Beyond that, the market square leaned against the heavier edifice of the town hall, its brickwork warm under noon sunlight.
Something pale curled near the pelican’s scaly ankle, catching Tara’s gaze. For a moment the loop looked tight, as if holding the heavy bird in place. Fish scales clung to her fingers while she edged closer. The barrel’s rim felt slick; her first grip slid away. She braced a knee against a crate, but the slats groaned and flexed. The barrel had been delivered before dawn by an apprentice, and its worn hoops no longer sat flush. She had hauled heavier loads that morning, yet the short climb pulled her sleeves high above her elbows. The bird shifted, jostling a spray of cold water across her boots. Only then did Tara reach for the pale strand, hoping to free it before the creature scattered the stall.
Tara’s thumb and forefinger closed on the strand; instead of rope, brittle willow bark cracked between her nails. The fragment belonged not to the pelican but to a broken hoop that ringed the barrel’s mouth. One gentle tug lifted the scrap free, and the bird remained unharmed, merely watching with one dark eye. A gust sliding over the market’s old bastion rattled empty baskets overhead, and the pelican leapt away, leaving a faint patch of moisture on the barrel rim. Tara climbed down, noticed that her cart—packed to the top earlier—had lost two small crates to a careless bump, and gathered them from the cobbles. She guided the lighter cart toward the square’s exit.
