Only three blank sheets remained on the bench, the earlier pile already sliced into planes scattered across sunlit grass. Morning glare bounced off each white wing, drawing bright streaks that crossed the gentle slope toward a chalk circle below. Beyond the fence, grape rows formed a lush lattice, and the hillside offered a breathtaking view under clear light. Gwen had folded an intricate pattern along the wings of her newest plane, hoping added stiffness would carry it twelve paces. The chalk circle had been drawn by Thea earlier, its rim still shining where the sun struck untouched powder. Gwen stepped into the brightest patch on the ridge and released the plane, watching it dive and stop three paces short. She guessed that if the wings stayed level, the glide would ride the bright air longer toward the target.
Erik crossed the dim retrieval zone, picked up the plane, slipped one small paper clip on its nose, and returned grinning. They moved back to the launch point, the sun now higher, wiping away the last shade beside the ruler. This second flight sliced through bright air yet dropped sharply, landing inside a long stripe of glare five steps from the rim. An inkling flickered between them when both noticed the left wing catching more light than the right. Erik pinched that edge inward on a flat stone, and Gwen slid a second clip underneath, doubling the weight at the point. On the third try the wings shone evenly; the plane glided through alternating bands of brightness, then fell cleanly inside. Its nose touched the lit grass without a sound, and in that silent moment the threshold was finally crossed.
A stray gust rose from the vineyard slope, caught the victorious plane, and rolled it over the circle like a thin leaf. It landed upside down nearer the wind-reading ribbon, so Gwen and Erik jogged downhill, shadows tilting ahead of their steps. When Gwen lifted the paper she found a tiny ladybug under the wing, its shell glinting whenever sunlight slipped between grass blades. Neither child had planned the bright stowaway, yet they watched it crawl along the crease that had guided their last throw. The insect paused on the wing tip, where a narrow beam of light drew a neat outline around its folded back.
