She fixed the clip onto her blue plastic disc, judging balance by the slight tilt of the centre weight. Beyond the wide window an outdoor space stretched toward the street, and distant bird calls slipped through the frame. Zara glanced at the pencil sketch on the smudged reference card; the faded strokes carried quiet wisdom from earlier matches. Taking a steady breath, she pressed the launcher spindle into place and added the first clip beside the rim hole.

She decided one would not suffice, so she reached again and fixed a second, heavier clip opposite the first weight. For final touches she pressed a slender rubber ring around the rim, hoping the extra grip would steady collisions. The sunlight edged farther into the bowl, lifting the surface temperature until faint warmth soaked through her fingertips. Heat softened the plastic rim, and the second clip sank a millimetre lower, loosening its bite on the disc. The tiny shift upset balance; Zara launched, the disc hummed unevenly, drifted sunward, and clipped Miles’s spinning top. The collision popped the rubber ring loose, sent it skimming across the scratched floor, and both tops wobbled like slow coins. If the sunlight shifted again, her overloaded build would tumble completely out of the bowl.

Zara crouched beside the tray, cheeks warm from the reflected sun that now climbed halfway across the table. She pinched the loosened second clip, lifted it free, and held it aloft for inspection. With less weight the disc felt lighter, and a small grin spread while she realigned the remaining parts. She dragged the cardboard storage pouch onto the table edge, blocking the sliding light and halting further warming of the bowl. Voices from the hall, where workers arranged tables for a community reunion, floated through the doorway and mixed with the steadier hum. The felt tray that had held four clips was now marked by one neat gap. One freed clip rolled in a lazy arc along the raised rim toward the bench.
