The rinse cup stood to her right, cloudy as early mist, yet she dipped the brush only once, a quick swirl. Muddy grey clung to the hair, and a dull streak appeared across the soft blue. Her elbow stiffened; she paused, then chose to forge ahead, repeating the stroke while the paper still yielded. The breeze shifted around the porch planter made from an old cask, speeding the paper’s surface change on the left corner. Ilsa had placed a semester’s stack of practice pages under the board for height, and now they tilted slightly, so every second mattered. She rinsed again, this time rolling the handle between fingers and keeping the brush under water longer. Relief loosened her shoulders. At that instant, a single cold droplet slid from the swollen wooden handle and struck a part of sky that had already set.
