Nội dung truyện
English Bản gốc
"Off the towels, whiskers," Blythe said.
She flicked a damp corner of cloth aside, and a ginger kitten burst from the basket with startling velocity.
Soapy steam drifted around the machine, carrying a sugary orange-lime odor that clung to Blythe's nose.
The kitten hissed with a ferocious buzz, then tried to hurdle a tilted bottle but skidded on suds.
The drum had been left half-full, and a yeasty wool smell seeped through its rubber seal.
Blythe lunged, yet her momentum slipped; she had been expecting weight, not a swift puff of fur.
To avoid crushing the cap, she had to stride aside, and the kitten vanished behind the humming dryer.
The sour tang of the garbage alcove met her as she crossed the corridor, arms loaded with empty detergent boxes.
Fluorescent light above flickered, turning labels into blurred grey bands until a steady glow returned with a faint electric breath.
She slid the cardboard between already packed bags, the vinegar-sharp smell of yesterday’s food rising once the lid lifted.
Several envelopes had been slipped into her slot during lunch, each holding the dusty taste of recycled fibre.
Blythe sorted letters by door number, her fingers carrying detergent sweetness that overpowered the musty paper scent.
If another buzzer sounded, she would stride upstairs for the parcel later, preferring to finish one loop first.
A neighbour’s dryer sheet drifted through the hallway air, adding a buttery vanilla curtain that masked every other odor.
Halfway back to the laundry room, a rapid rustle swept past her ankles.
The ginger kitten darted ahead, carrying the fallen cap like a damp blue trophy.
Blythe followed, matching its zigzags with an even stride, careful not to startle the tiny courier.
At the folding table, she kneeled, let the soapy smell drift away, and tapped the cap; the kitten released it without protest.
A silver name tag on its collar glimmered, shifting her first impression from ferocious outsider to somebody’s wandering roommate.
Five pale pawprints dotted the table’s steel surface; Blythe brushed one into a watery streak, leaving the others to dry.
