Small waves tapped the stones with a soft pat-pat.
Kit and Viola stood by the lake's short dock. A cardboard boat drifted near a loose, splintered plank. They wanted the boat back on the shore.
Water slid in and covered the stones for a moment. Then it pulled back, and the stones showed dry patches. Another wave rushed up and covered the boat again. When it sank back, the cardboard edge touched the plank. Cool air moved over the wet stones.
Viola held a small grabber with a plastic claw. "I can reach from here," she said. Kit set a flat piece of cardboard on the dry stones. "The water keeps coming and going," Kit said.
He slid the cardboard under the boat during a dry pullback. A new wave lifted the loose plank and nudged the boat. Water carried it onto the cardboard, and then drained away. The boat now rested on the dry piece near shore. Viola hooked the edge and drew the cardboard in. Kit lifted the little boat onto the grass.
