Lana rolled the hose over, and water began to flow. Cool air lay on the grass. Valen aimed the stream at the high end. White dust turned to pale paste at once. Thin lines ran down the board and glistened.

A tiny cut in the board caught the paste and split it. The left flow slid under a brick and pooled. A dark line crossed the path and marked the stones. "The lines branch in many directions," Lana said.

A small spray shot from a tiny hole near the end. It struck dry soil and carved a narrow track. The new track met the pool and sped it along.

Valen bent the hose, and the main stream slowed. He lifted the end high over the board. The paste still crept along the cut and dripped. Under the brick, a thin line kept sliding around a pebble.
