Remy pressed his shoe against the wood and pushed. The long plank rubbed the frame and stuck at one end. The far tip bumped a low shelf, and cups clinked. A light breeze moved across his sleeves near the hinge.

Remy crouched and tapped the plank with his knuckles. It made a low, empty knock that echoed under it. He slid his hand along the edge and paused. His fingers found a thin seam and a loose cap. He lifted one side, and something inside shifted and rattled.

Wanda leaned close and watched his hands. He turned the hollow plank and poured out dry beans. The beans rolled in a line along the step. Two beans tapped a toy car, and the car rolled. The car touched the shelf, and a spoon tinkled. Cups in the old tea service shifted but stayed upright. With the load gone, Remy lifted the plank with ease. He set it beside the wall and cleared the door. Beans settled across the floor, and the latch lay clear. Remy wiped his palms and pulled the door straight open.
