A snail crosses the wet paving. Its shell turns, slow and steady. Faye stands and follows behind. The small creature draws a thin line. She kneels by the small puddle. Her palms rest on cool stone. Grit presses lightly into her skin. A pale shoe print dries at the rim.

Water seeps to the flat drain grate. Leaves float there and slowly spin. The father says, "There it goes." A strip of bark rests on the puddle. A roof drip grows, then drops. It taps the bark and leaf. They spin fast in small circles. The snail pauses at the edge.

Faye stands still and watches. Her boots press the hard mud. Dry lines streak the brick wall. A drip patters on the wet stone.
