Ian pulled on the low door. He and Yara walked up the drive to the garage. They came for his red scooter near the back corner. Cool air touched their fingers by the cold metal.

The door lifted a little, and a box blocked space. Ian gave the box a push with both hands. The box scraped the floor and tipped a long broom. The broom knocked a tin, and small marbles poured out. They rolled across the concrete into the far corner. One marble hit a toy car, and the car moved. A small device on the wall clicked, and light came on.

Yara stepped in and steadied the broom with her foot. “I can hold this,” she said, and she did. Ian picked up marbles and set them in a cup. Together they cleared a path beside the scooter’s wheel. Ian took the handle and rolled the scooter out. Yara eased the box back and kept the shelf still. Ian set the scooter beside the step.
