Is that wheel mark new?
Esme looks at the mark.
Knees press loops; fresh line cuts; old track stays.
Warm light lands on her cheek.
A woody smell drifts from the blocks.
The father sits by the shelf.
A stuffed bear rests on his lap.
He reads in a low voice.
"I see a red barn," he says.
"And a blue sky."
On his knee, a page shows a farm.
Tall grain fills a wide field.
A brick barn stands near a small family.
A fine speck lands on her eyelash.
It tickles.
Esme blinks.
The mark comes clear again.
Something soft brushes her ankle.
A blanket end slides on the floor.
A small car rolls from under the shelf.
It taps Esme's shoe.
She stays very still.
Beside her knee, the damp patch lightens.
