A soap bubble slips up.
Cleo watches and follows it.
It moves across the sunbeam.
Her hands rest on the counter.
The wood is smooth under her palms.
A sticky circle lies by her wrist.
Its rim is dry and pale.
The bubble drifts to the board.
Flour dust glows around the spoon.
Cleo steps along the counter edge.
Her left hand sticks a little.
She peels it free and shifts.
The father is a parent and hums.
Steam rises from the covered pot.
The bubble meets warm steam and pops.
Cleo stops near the stove.
She stands still.
Very still.
Only the lid rattles softly.
A light plastic cup clicks on the counter.
