A low wax smell rose from the open crayon box.

Quinn stood at the paper zone near the clean sheet. The uncle sat at the far edge with the small glass. "I am right here," he said, and sipped once.

Quinn wanted to draw a swan on the clean sheet. Quinn gathered three colors near the fresh blank corner. The shorter crayon sat in the open crayon box. Quinn pulled it up by the wrapper rim. It stuck and did not move at all. The leaning lid tapped the table, and a wax flake slid.

One side of the shorter crayon lay in the sunbeam. Quinn touched both sides with a fingertip and waited. The warm side felt soft under the nail. The shaded side felt cool and more firm.

Quinn pressed the cool side and lifted from that edge. The shorter crayon came free with a small click. The peeled wrapper strip finished its curl and flicked a flake. The flake landed near the clean sheet’s blank corner. A soft draft crossed the table, and the flake slid off. At the far end, the small stack’s top corner lifted, then settled.

Quinn managed the first line of the swan’s long neck. A shallow dune formed behind it with slow strokes. Two straight lines formed a ladder in the picture. The final curve met the line, and the neck closed.
