Nội dung truyện
English Bản gốc
Opal visited the small harbor with Janet after lunch each calm day. She always paused by the repair shed railing. She pressed the small brass service bell with one finger. The sound rang out, and she listened for the echo under the boards. Cool, damp air carried a salt smell. The bell’s dome felt cold against her fingertip. Small waves lapped the dark posts. Moored wooden hulls gave slow creaks that answered one another. A line of cork floats knocked lightly along the edge. Bits of leaf and tiny harbor refuse drifted beside them. They touched the rocks with soft ticks. Opal stood inside the sturdy rail and rang the bell again. Janet stood beside her, one hand on the rail. The ring lifted and struck the space. It came back thinner from the planked ceiling.
A narrow thread of meltwater slid off a folded canvas cover. It ran toward a tied rowboat. Drops began to tap near the bell. A cold splash touched Opal’s knuckle before her ear caught the change. The next ring came back softer. The drop and the lap together muffled part of it. Opal kept the routine. She turned her wrist and cupped her other hand around the bell. She aimed it toward a stout piling. The echo grew clearer. An unexpected, higher ring rose with it: a thin, higher ring from below the boards. She leaned only as far as the rail allowed and peered down through the gaps.
A narrow glass jar lay wedged in cork and little refuse near a stone. Its tin lid trembled on the mouth. Each small lap raised it a finger-width. It fell and made a brighter ping. Drips from the meltwater found the lid and made a faster rattle. The two notes met in the shaded space and made a soft hum. The hum buzzed against Opal’s palm. She rang more gently and held the bell lower. The mix of echo and ping shifted the pitch into a new color of sound. Opal set the bell on the rail, and tiny beads of water dotted its rim. Her sleeve held a cool line from the splash. The jar under the dock kept tapping.
