Yasmin and Mabel sat on a stone bench that faced the old fountain.

Yasmin set her notebook on her knees and found her pencil between pages. Her wrist drew short, curved lines the way her hand knew by feel. Mabel rested beside her, a canvas bag hanging by a sling from her shoulder. Cool mist touched their forearms, and a low hiss lay under the square's chatter. The rim looked pale and smooth where many hands had paused over years. Coins on the basin floor looked dull, and a mossy line marked a gap in the paving. Water kept rinsing those same stones and returned to its round pool. Brown leaves rested by the rim, and their edges softened in the moving water.

A cold dot landed on Yasmin's knuckle before she looked up from the page. The breeze had turned, and the fine spray reached farther and speckled her drawing. She slid the notebook back along the bench and held the corner taut. Mabel lifted her small camera; its sling pulled tight, and the buckle gave a click. A thin rainbow edged the spray where sunlight crossed it, and Yasmin traced a bent line. Mabel held one end of her scarf near the page; Yasmin tucked it under the corner. They kept their seats, and the fountain kept working at its slow, even rhythm. A darker arc formed on the stones by their shoes, and wet freckles dotted her sleeve. Her pencil left a lighter mark where the paper had turned damp. Spray pattered on the bench slat and left small rings that darkened.
