As he stepped between crates of oranges and folded quilts, the crowd pressed around him; a bell clanged at the fountain, and traders lifted baskets toward arriving customers.

By the time Galen reached the tiny counter, the wooden boxes were nearly bare. The merchant balanced a ledger, and the last bundle was being weighed for another buyer. If Galen had arrived earlier, he would have slipped his coins onto the scale without delay. Instead, his fingers drummed the edge of the table while he searched for another approach. A coppery scent drifted from broken stems beneath the bench; their aroma hinted that some strength remained. An idea surfaced: unused fragments might still yield flavor after careful extraction.
