English 原文
Milo balanced a narrow wooden box against his hip while stepping into the sunlit plaza at noon. Salt carried from the harbor rode the air, and the crowd flowed between stalls draped in bright fabric. Gulls wheeled overhead, their shadows looping over the paving stones like lazy commas. The weather looked calm, the quintessential coastal midday, yet flags at the tower’s peak already snapped in warning. Across the open flagstones stood the glass-fronted exhibition hall, his target. Reaching it before the next ferry whistle required threading past carts and canvases. Undaunted, he adjusted his grip and entered the moving stream of vendors, tourists, and bicycles. A street violin sang above the murmur, its high note threading through the bustle.
Halfway across, the promised lull vanished. A sudden gale barreled along the arcade, toppling a stack of straw hats and flipping menus. Fabric slapped against poles; paper cups spun. The box slid against Milo’s palm; he lurched, knees bending, and steadied it against his chest. A hat rolled underfoot; his boot skidded; momentum shoved him toward a café bench. He caught the bench’s iron armrest, righted himself, and noted a brief opening in the traffic—an opportunity no wider than a doorway. He darted through, coat flaring like a sail, and reached the hall’s bronze door just as wind jarred it shut.
The latch clanged, refusing his initial push. Milo wedged the box beneath one arm, seized a loose wooden prop from a nearby display, and leveraged its length against the handle. Metal rasped; the door yielded by degrees. Inside, the echo of the plaza dulled, and colored panes threw fractured light across the floor. An attendant behind a counter tapped a list, explaining the curator had moved the featured pieces to the mezzanine, making room for late arrivals. Milo nodded, set the wooden container on a marble plinth, and unlatched the lid.
Within lay a single glass orb. Wind-borne grit, caught earlier, now sparkled inside like drifting stars. The attendant leaned closer; the orb rotated slowly on felt runners, tiny grains tracing spiral paths. A child passing with a guardian paused, transfixed by the swirling pattern, and others gathered. The curator emerged, tested the plinth’s balance, and repositioned lights so reflections danced across the ceiling. Phones lifted; screens glowed, capturing the slow cosmic swirl while whispers rippled along the railing. Milo stepped back, coat settling, eyes tracking the ripple of motion spreading in concentric circles. Outside, air calmed; market noises thinned; across the square, fallen flyers rested against quiet stone.
