Mateo at the Service Ramp-

English 原文
Mateo balanced a long cardboard tube against his shoulder while weaving past crowds near Riverside Market. The municipal hall loomed ahead, a granite fortress sealing the skyline. Noon bells from its tower rolled across the colonnade. The aroma of roasting beans asserted temporary hegemony over peppery steam from soup stalls. Bicycles rattled along the curb, their bells chiming over laughter that drifted from a nearby fountain. Above, a lone gull circled, scanning for crumbs. Overhead awnings fluttered; thin shafts of brightness striped the cobblestones. Mateo aimed for the glass exhibition hall beyond the square, hoping to deliver his new charcoal panorama before jury doors closed.
A vendor pushed a heavy barrow of oranges into the flow; one wheel jammed and the load jolted. Spheres cascaded across the path. One grazed Mateo's ankle, turning his stride into a skid. He caught the cart’s wooden frame, using the sudden incline as leverage to steady himself. Rubber soles squeaked against a damp plank that felt yielding under weight; the plank bowed then bounced back, flinging a few drops of puddle onto his trouser cuff. Around him, buyers and sellers formed a quick cluster—a symbiotic swirl where stall keepers retrieved fruit while children darted after runaway globes. The blockage thickened, and every breath carried citrus spray.
Drumming erupted from behind a fabric booth. Performers on stilts swung into view, their violet costumes brushing hanging lanterns. Heads tilted upward; the crowd compressed sideways, opening a narrow gap near a service ramp Mateo had overlooked. He ducked through. The ramp climbed the rear wall of the exhibition hall, a service path usually hidden behind bins. Metal ribs clanged beneath his steps; a maintenance gate at the top hung ajar. A guard inside the corridor raised eyebrows, then shrugged at the sight of the entry badge on Mateo’s jacket pocket. No words passed; the corridor smelled of sawdust and fresh paint.
Inside the vast atrium, technicians adjusted spotlights while crates shifted on small trolleys. The market outside still rumbled through the high windows, but the rhythm arrived muted, like ocean surf reaching an inland room. Mateo unfastened the tube’s cap and slid the scroll onto a clerk’s desk. Paper loosened, unrolled half a turn, and graphite towers emerged under the wash of artificial daylight. The clerk clipped a tag, slid the artwork onto a rack, and turned back to her tablet. The rolled canvas rested on the oak counter beneath steady afternoon light.
