Lily opened the design on her bright computer monitor. She planned a small calendar for her cousin. Every picture sat neatly in its square on screen. She wanted to print before the soup cooled. A thick pile of high quality paper waited beside the printer. A soft cushion gave comfort to her lower back. Steam from the soup drifted through the doorway.

She pressed print and heard a sudden crunch inside. The printer stopped; a corner of paper stuck halfway. A gentle pull tore the sheet and scattered scraps. Loose pieces slid across the desk, knocking her pencil pot. Pens rolled, tapped the mug, and coffee splashed forward. Brown drops reached the power cable under the monitor. Lily jumped and pulled the plug. The screen darkened, but the spill slowed. She wiped the desk, gathered the pens, and breathed out. The benefit of her quick reaction showed when nothing shorted. She fed a fresh sheet and tried again. The printer hummed; crisp pages landed in a safe stack. She switched the monitor back on.
