Eliot Beneath the Evening Tide-

English 原文
Late light slanted across the wooden research deck where Eliot unfolded a narrow stool and balanced his sketchbook on his knees. Below the platform, clusters of mussels—the hardy native species clinging to these pilings for centuries—darkened the waterline. Grey-green waves shuffled in and retreated, each one lifting a silver sheen before the surface slid flat again. A visiting group drifted past, their overlapping conversations weaving a brief net of intersubjectivity that hovered above snack wrappers flicking in the breeze. He glanced at them, then returned to the foam, pencil tracing the restless pattern.
A small data recorder waited beside his boot. He clicked it on, and a dull green light confirmed that every splash reaching the sensor would gain a measurable place in tomorrow’s graph. Wind rushed suddenly; the first page of his sketchbook snapped backward, almost tearing away. He caught the edge, but the motion bumped the recorder toward a gap in the planks. It slipped once, scraped wood, then halted as its strap snagged a rusty nail. Eliot crouched, tugged the strap free, and wedged the device against a bolt before steadying his seat once more.
Just then a heavier surge rolled beneath the deck. The swell curled around a low beam, lifting strands of kelp that usually hid among shadow. Something bright clung to the wet fronds—a tiny seahorse gleaming orange and aqua. He outlined it quickly, thrilled by the discovery. A second glance shifted the moment: sunlight fractured across glass edges, revealing a mosaic no longer than his thumb, clearly handcrafted and anchored by thin wire. His earlier certainty dissolved into plain subjectivity, exposed by the glint of solder along the tail. The art piece rocked gently, reflecting dusk in broken jewel tones.
Eliot steadied the recorder again, snapped one final sketch, and watched the tide withdraw. Beneath the deck, evening air cooled as gulls circled farther offshore. The recorder rested beside his closed sketchbook while thin foam lines lay motionless around the pier piles.
