Saturday air carried bouncing echoes across the playground. Lucas, a basketball enthusiast, has trained here every weekend, and today he carried the only orange globe that his friends expected for the after-school ball game. A crow swooped low; its wing brushed the ball, and the sphere rolled away from Lucas’s sneakers. The ball crossed cracked concrete and touched a bench that had been painted that morning. Fresh green streaks clung to the surface, leaving a tangible stickiness whenever Lucas tried to dribble. The clock above the gym roof showed ten minutes until tipoff; every second shortened the distance between Lucas and the waiting court.

He lifted the ball and hurried toward a drinking fountain that glimmered beside the path. Cool water washed away the brightest paint, yet slick patches remained, and the ball slipped from his palms at the worst moment, splashing into a patch of chalk dust left by children who had drawn hopscotch squares. Lucas blinked; the dust coated the damp leather like powder on cake, cancelling the gluey film. He spun the ball, and small pale spirals brightened the panels. When he reached the court, teammates dribbled once, grinned at the unexpected pattern, and stepped aside. Lucas leaped, released, and the ball dropped clean through the net.
