Thin heat shimmered above the sports field, and the bright metal stand for the afternoon assembly was already warm enough to sting fingertips. Emma and Joel carried a fascinating glass owl they have prepared all week; their dedication has shaped each curved feather. A soccer coach bounced a ball nearby, and every kick sent chalky dust into the air. When they reached the stand, noon sunlight burned the glass while the dust cloud drifted toward it at the same moment.

Both forces struck together. The hot glare threatened to crack the owl, and the swirling dust searched for every open surface. Emma grabbed a wide, abandoned cardboard poster lying beside the track. She raised it like a shield, blocking the drifting dust so Joel could guide the owl onto the stand. One small mistake during that lift, she knew, might shatter the fragile sculpture. With the dust held back, Joel aligned the base, yet the sun still heated the glass. He slid a thin cloth under the owl to lift it slightly, letting air cool the base. The cardboard soon softened; corners bent under the weight of the flying dust and growing moisture. A sudden gust tore a strip from the bottom edge, and the loose piece flipped onto the grass, painting a pale outline of the owl in powder. They paused, surprised by the accidental shape.

The glass owl now stood upright, shining but unprotected from later gusts. The sagging cardboard leaned crooked against the stand. Dust hovered in a thin band above the grass.
