Jules at the Stream Bank-

English 原文
Morning sunlight lay over the village commons when Jules arrived with a painted cardboard boat under his arm. He had spent the previous night sealing every edge with wax. A satisfied nod followed; he expected the model to float across the narrow stream, turn, and return on its own. A light breeze carried the boat farther than expected. Within minutes it drifted beyond the reeds toward the opposite bank and stopped near a fallen branch. Jules leaned forward, sleeves brushing the water, yet his fingertips barely touched the stern. The science fair started after lunch, and the small boat formed the centrepiece of his experiment. Retrieving it before the judges arrived suddenly became his single, visible target.
He tried a stick first, snapping a slender birch limb and sliding it under the hull. The attempt produced only ripples that spread in mocking circles across the clear surface. After that he tied a stone to a length of string that had been left in the grass. The improvised hook sank too deeply, pulling the boat farther out toward the darker pool beyond the reeds. Moderate progress showed when the current nudged the craft a finger’s width nearer, yet the gain vanished each time the wind shifted. If he had packed the magnet he mentioned during class, the whole recovery would have been simple. Rather than complain, Jules adopted a proactive approach for the next attempt. He removed his shoes, rolled his trousers, and stepped into the stream, careful to place each foot where the pebbles looked stable.
The cold water reached his calves, and the current tugged at his balance. Halfway across, a sudden splash startled him; a playful spaniel plunged beside the branch, chasing sun reflections. The dog’s chest brushed the cardboard, sending the boat spinning toward Jules. He steadied himself, scooped the model with both palms, and lifted it high. Droplets flashed like glass threads under the late-morning sky as he swung the boat toward the shore. The unexpected helper paddled away without waiting for praise, leaving circles widening toward the reeds. Jules waded back to the grass, clothes darker but smile wider than before. He set the boat on the grass and pressed along the hull. No leaks appeared, paint stayed unbroken, and wax remained firm—tangible results after the sleepless preparation. The small red boat rested beside his damp sneakers on the sunlit grass.
