Lantern Test at Dusk-

English 原文
Sunset drained colour from the river while Milo unlatched the broad doors of the old riverside workshop. Inside, pine shavings still clung to the floorboards from afternoon carving lessons. Folding tables carried glass jars, thin bamboo frames, sheets of colored paper, and a brass torch meant to test finished lanterns. Milo’s simple ambition was clear: light the first lantern before night covered the courtyard, so neighbours passing the bridge could see whether the design held. Nearby, a raccoon rummaged among stacked crates, nose dipping into an open bag of carrots left by gardeners. Milo flicked the light switch; the overhead bulbs hummed, bouncing pale halos along the rafters. In that bright hush tools watched from their hooks, and fresh lacquer glimmered on half–built toys. Activity crackled like a held breath, waiting for flame.
Milo lifted one lantern, its paper walls the shade of early peaches. The cord tangled around a clamp, refusing his first pull; he steadied the frame, let the twist loosen, then set the lantern on a stool. Over time he had learned that patience, not force, prevented tears along the seams. He struck the torch; a slim tongue of fire emerged, low and steady. Children clustered at the doorway; scorched ribbons from earlier trials fluttered beside them, and everyone remained aware of consequences. A sudden clang shot through the room; the raccoon, now on a shelf, toppled a tin bucket. Sparks arced toward loose shavings. Milo’s heel skidded as he lunged, cupped the torch, and blew. One rogue spark tried to ignite a curled shaving, but a quick stamp from a teenager flattened it, leaving only a thin thread of smoke. The startled animal fled through the side opening, claws rattling on metal.
The bucket rolled in widening circles, slowed, and fell on its rim. Murmurs faded while the group rearranged the tables, sweeping shavings into mounds far from the testing area. Milo retied the lantern cord, hoisted the frame above his head, and hooked it to a beam. When he reopened the torch valve, the flame steadied once more, this time far from loose debris. Paper brightened from within, sending gentle swells of rose and gold across the timber ceiling. Outside, the river carried the new color downstream, and footsteps scattered along the bridge as passers-by paused, pointing, then moved on. Tools stopped rattling, and the workshop air cooled to an easy stillness. Dim yellow light rested on the newly quiet bench.
