A programmed jet paused without warning; the central trickle seemed to vanish, then a fresh surge sprang upward, flaring brighter than the lamps around the pool. Spray cooled his sleeves, and scattered drops dotted the fresh page. He shifted, trying to keep the lines intact, yet the damp paper buckled and his charcoal rolled off the wall, tapping once before slipping through a square maintenance grate beside the basin.

He crouched, fingers sliding between cold bars, but the pencil point stayed just out of reach. A service panel near his knee hung open by a loose bolt; one push swung it wider, revealing a narrow cavity where pipes shimmered with thin sheets of water. On a metal shelf inside, dusty binders lay stamped with past figures on the municipal capital reserve, their corners darkened by humidity. Milo balanced on one foot and stretched. His shoe skidded on slick stone, forcing him to grip the panel edge; the sudden wrench knocked a small valve. Water within the conduit answered with a hollow thump.

A heartbeat later the fountain system reacted. Liquid thundered along hidden channels, then burst into the pool in a broad cascade. Foam raced outward, lifting the surface until it met the marble lip and spilled over in silver ribbons. Nearby visitors stepped back, raising phones as the overflow chased across the pavement. From beneath the rolling water, Milo’s charcoal bobbed upward, followed by a tarnished emblem shaped like a tiny bird. A child’s quick gasp broke the hum of falling water, yet no one moved to claim the object. Milo scooped both items, droplets sliding along his forearm.

Within minutes the pressure eased. The jets settled into their ordinary rhythm, and gutters carried excess liquid toward the street drains. Milo wiped the emblem on his sleeve, its metal gleaming where the flow had polished an edge, and tucked it into his pocket beside the rescued charcoal. He stepped back to redraw the scene, droplets still clinging to the paper yet drying fast under evening air. Thin ripples rested across the calm surface.
