Evening lowered itself over the municipal botanical garden, and Elias carried a bundle of paper lanterns toward the central pond. The path from the gate curved like a garden path through trimmed hedges, their leaves glistening after afternoon rain. Beside the walkway rose an austere administration building; its granite walls showed almost no ornament, only a sparse row of narrow windows catching the fading amber. Elias crouched near a bench, sliding a lantern from its sleeve. He struck a match, waited for the small flame to steady, and slipped it beneath the thin waxed paper. A soft glow spread, luminous yet fragile, and the lantern bobbed gently when he hooked it to a bamboo pole. Light rippled across the pond in uneven circles, reflecting against reeds and the austere façade behind him. Sprinklers suddenly whirred to life—a timer he had forgotten—casting needles of water across the lawn. Several visitors skipped back, laughing, coats flapping. Drops struck the nearest lantern; paper darkened, but the frame held. Elias shifted the string higher; water beaded and fell, sparkling. A cricket resumed its rhythm under a bench, and the distant hum of traffic slipped between leaves, thinning as the evening deepened.
