English 原文
Late afternoon light angled through the airport atrium, laying long gold bars across the floor. Elias balanced a sketchbook on his knees, graphite poised, eyes tracking a wide-bodied jet taxiing toward the distant threshold. The aircraft’s slow roll offered a rhythm he hoped to sustain on paper—wing, engine, tail, each line in step with the wheels below. Rows of ground staff moved with practiced wisdom, reflective vests blinking against sunlit concrete. Nearby passengers drifted around him; their steps adjusted in quiet deference when a maintenance cart rolled past, its small horn chirping twice before weaving between suitcases.
A sudden pocket of wind slipped through the open automatic doors. The top sheet of Elias’s sketchbook lifted, spun once, and skated across the polished tiles. Pencil clattered after it. He lunged, shoes squeaking, but the page slid farther, arriving at the base of a sculpture made from old propeller blades. The sheet curled against metal, refusing to lie flat. Elias pressed a palm onto the restless edge while his free hand gathered the pencil. The pause facilitated a fresh angle: from this lower viewpoint the parked jet seemed to dwarf everything, terminal windows mirrored inside its silver belly, and a service truck appeared like a toy beneath the sweeping fuselage.
Returning to his seat required a detour; a luggage trolley now blocked the direct path. Elias threaded through handle grips and canvas straps, guarding the sketch against new drafts. When he settled again, the runway scene had shifted: the jet waited idly, and a smaller vintage plane—polished, scarlet, unannounced—rolled into view, propeller blades flashing. Elias flipped to a clean page, shoulders tilting forward, led rapidly mapping the newcomer’s compact silhouette. The earlier wind eased, leaving still air around the glass wall, and distant engines hummed at an even pitch. Beyond the glass, twin landing lights hovered while the distant engine note settled over the tarmac.
