English 原文
Mila had visited the library many times, yet she still stumbled over new corners each week. This afternoon her observable goal felt simple: locate an antique atlas for her group project. She traced stone tiles toward the history aisle, noticing how dust swirled like fine ash whenever someone crossed a sun-beam. A whisper of air turned pages on nearby tables, shifting her perception of distance; the maze of shelves stretched farther than usual. An elderly librarian offered a gentle nod, her palm hovering above a stack—nothing more. Mila’s shoulder brushed a rolling ladder, and it trembled against metal rails, echoing through the high room.
The atlas should have rested on the fourth shelf, but that slot gaped empty. Mila climbed two rungs; the ladder wheels stuck, forcing her to step down. She had expected one smooth attempt, not this repeated resistance. A narrow alcove waited behind an overturned cart, yet its entrance felt almost hidden. If she had waited longer, she would have missed the faint change in light that leaked through a stained-glass window. She slipped into the cramped space; brittle magazines leaned outward, blocking her reach. Her elbow nudged a thin booklet, and a tiny swirl of ash drifted off its cover. That motion, small as the mythical butterfly effect, tipped another spine, revealing a weathered volume pressed against the wall.
The atlas emerged, but its latch refused to open until Mila slid a bookmark between the covers. A gray moth, startled by shifting paper, fluttered free and settled on her sleeve; its calm weight mirrored the quiet compassion that guided her hands. She carried the book to a broad table where afternoon light pooled like warm water across hardwood. The folded map lay open under the reading lamp.
