Finley Under the Darkened Sky-

English 原文
Finley stepped onto the roof terrace just as the solar eclipse narrowed the sun to a thin ring. Across the tiles, a metal case pressed against his shoulder, ticking faintly like a pocket clock. The brief task sounded simple—carry the instrument to the dome room—but the observatory stretched below him like a silent engine. As he pushed through the first door, pale crescent light spilled into a corridor maze whose turns refused any clear pattern. A draft skimmed the floor, stirring dust into small spirals that broke apart before settling again.
The second door resisted; its latch held until Finley leaned with both palms and shifted his weight. Wood scraped, hinges groaned, and the case slid down his arm before he caught it. Behind the door, numbered arrows lay painted on intersecting walls, yet faded keys and mismatched colors introduced an uncertainty about their accuracy. Finley chose the darkest branch; the air cooled, and oval shafts from skylights appeared then vanished in an almost ephemeral rhythm, as though shutters high above kept blinking.
A sudden clang echoed—a dropped tool somewhere in the building—pulling his eyes to a side passage. He misjudged the step, knocked his boot against a loose grate, and a thin panel tilted outward. Amplified air rushed through the gap; papers from a nearby table scattered into the passage, sailing toward a circular hall beyond. Finley followed the moving sheets and entered a chamber he had never seen on floor plans. Along the dome, painted bands formed a visible narrative structure: sowing fields, gathering clouds, and finally a ring of darkness swallowing a painted sun. In the center, a brass pedestal matched the dimensions of his metal case as precisely as if both objects had been cast in the same mold.
He lowered the case; clasps clicked against brass, and hidden gears began to rotate. Around the dome, slim glass louvers shifted, aligning their edges with the eclipse outside. Light thinned further, tracing the mural’s final band until each figure stood outlined in silver. The moving louvers slowed, their motion ceased, and dust specks hovered in the dim beam. Above the mural, the last rim of sunlight rested on the brass rim of the telescope.
