Mud, Condensation, and a Boot Print in the Observatory-

English 原文
Zephyr’s breath drifted in the dim red glow, while outside the open slit Saturn glimmered, and a boot-print pressed against the cool floor at his feet. Beyond the dome an unseen owl called every seven heartbeats, the sound threading through the steady inner whir of the tracking motor. The boot shape looked fresh, its edges dark, as though someone had wandered through last week’s quagmire below the hill before climbing the spiral stair. Yet only Zephyr and Kent occupied the observatory tonight, their own soles wiped clean on the rubber mat by the door. A pulse from the mount nudged the telescope forward, a precise beat that matched the owl’s cadence and underlined the print’s quiet riddle.
Zephyr knelt, one gloved finger tracing the outline where two floor plates met, their intersection forming a faint cross that split the print into quarters. Moisture shimmered along the grooves, pulsing whenever the dome rotated, almost as if the room breathed in perfect tempo with the night outside. He stood again, the steel mezzanine above him vibrating in short bursts whenever Kent shifted star charts across its narrow desk. Lines penciled on those charts branched like a gorgonian skeleton, delicate yet certain, each fork recording an earlier drift of the planets. Below, the telescope advanced with the patience of a silent herbivore grazing through an infinite pasture of faint points. Zephyr reached for a cloth, paused mid-air, and instead tapped the edge of the print, the cloth swinging slightly as his hand hovered.
Kent’s voice floated down, gentle in the red gloom, “Slit alignment off by a slice.” Zephyr stepped aside, hands on the dome wheel, giving it three measured pushes until the rhythm of the tracking clicks realigned with the owl’s call. As the dome slid, a bead of condensed water ran along the metal rib, fell, and splattered exactly within the boot outline, deepening its dark center. Another drip followed, each spaced by the mount’s steady beat, gradually filling the mark until the original tread marks blurred into a small shimmering pool. The supposed footprint unravelled, revealed as nothing more than a rhythmic leak channeling roof moisture through the seam above the plates. Zephyr exhaled, shifted weight from heel to toe, and let the cloth hang idle at his belt.
Returning to the table, he noted how his earlier shading around Saturn had darkened, graphite smears spreading where his chilled fingers brushed the paper. The pencil he had used now measured barely the length of a thumb, barked by repeated sharpening during the long vigil. Kent slid down the ladder, shook a thermos, and offered a silent grin before turning back to the mezzanine. Zephyr lifted the stub, rolled it between gloved fingers, and slipped the pencil stub into his pocket.
