Milo leaned over the oak workbench, small wooden ribs rising like cliffs around him. The unfinished three-masted galleon rested in the center; sails still waited to be stitched. He had measured the hull twice already, yet the next step refused to reveal itself. The blueprint had been stored somewhere above the workshop long ago, rolled inside a copper tube. Finding it became the only path forward, so he climbed the narrow stair toward the attic. A loose nail scraped his sleeve, and a low beam nudged his cap sideways, but the stair kept him moving upward.

The attic greeted him with stacked crates and rope coils frozen in thick cobwebs. Rope met a rusted ring on the floor in steady conflict, strands rubbing and fraying with every slight breeze. He pushed the boxes aside, and a cloud of dust puffed outward like flour over a baker's table. If the latch had opened on the first try, dust would not have scattered everywhere. At last the copper tube appeared beside a cracked trunk, its bronze surface dotted with green stains. The parchment inside was damp, corners curled in silent resentment against the long years. Ink blotches hid several numbers, yet a faint, forward-thinking grid still crossed the page.

Back at the bench, Milo pressed the damp sheet between glass panes. When he turned it to inspect a stain, an unexpected diagram appeared on the reverse. The sketch showed a paddle wheel meant to sit beneath the stern, an idea far ahead of its century. The discovery drew a broad grin across his face, yet the careful work continued without pause. He traced the surviving grid onto fresh paper, allowing new angles to grow beside the old. The keel pieces briefly stood misaligned; sandpaper and patience trimmed the excess until wood settled true. Warm lamplight filled the workshop, and a thin smell of pine resin drifted around the room. At dusk, shavings rested in neat piles, and the completed galleon stood quietly upon its stand.
