Milo stepped through the stone archway guarding the old school courtyard, his toolbox bumping against his knee. The afternoon sun caught the silver frame of a miniature greenhouse kit balanced on his cart. He had studied every diagram the night before, so the goal felt simple. Set up drip irrigation, connect the microprocessor, and watch seedlings drink during tomorrow's presentation. Yet the first snag appeared at once, announcing that smooth plans rarely last long. The latch on the reservoir stuck, and when Milo tugged harder, the lid sprang open, scattering tubes across the tiles. Water pooled near his shoes, and a breeze pushed one hose beneath a bench. Kneeling, he gathered the wet parts while the courtyard clock chimed, reminding him daylight was already thinning.

He dried the electronics on his sleeve, aware that the exposed circuit board looked vulnerable to any trace of grit. The control panel had been coated with a nano-etched surface that spread moisture into almost invisible beads. Even so, dry courtyard dust still clung around the delicate metal contacts. After carefully fitting a new gasket, he reattached the heavy reservoir. However, the first test sent a sudden jet through a loose joint, knocking a pot aside. If he had noticed the crack earlier, water would have stayed inside the pipe. Milo wished he had brought extra tape, but absence offered another route. He rewrote the timing loop so the microprocessor opened valves gently from now. Then he wedged a pebble under the tilted pot to level the flow.

Dusk pressed in from the corners of the courtyard while the final adjustment clicked into place. The hoses now released calm drops, tapping soil like a patient drum. A soft rustle answered from overhead, slipping through leaves that brushed the greenhouse roof. Ivy that had threaded the courtyard wall all summer now dangled across the greenhouse roof. Its thirstier tips dipped into the steady drip that slid from each nozzle. Milo blinked, surprised by the uninvited guest, yet the system continued without error. The ivy curved toward each nozzle, forming a living curtain around the frame. By the time the courtyard lights snapped on, seedlings, pots, and hanging vines shared the same rhythm. Fine droplets rested on the broad leaves arching above the wooden bench.
