English 原文
Evening clouds leaned over the Saltmarsh path as Mira lifted her old camera bag and stepped onto the wooden pier. She had always planned to visit during the spring tide, when fresh silt widened the delta and rare birds gathered above silver water. The narrow pier had been repaired by volunteers only a week before, yet several planks still wobbled. Beneath her boots, gaps showed the fragile framework of beams soaked by last night’s storm. Brochures about wetland governance lay scattered near the entrance; wind flicked their corners, and a map slid into the reeds. Mira kept walking, her steps quick while daylight slipped behind the dunes.
Midway across the marsh, a sudden pool blocked the boards, reflecting red sky like spilled paint. Another photographer arrived from the opposite side, and an unspoken negotiation shaped their slow sidestep around the water. While waiting, Mira checked her equipment and discovered the battery icon flashing. If she had remembered spare batteries earlier, the delay would have been shorter. She slid the drained pack beneath her scarf to warm it, then tapped the shutter; the screen blinked back to life. When she finally reached the viewing platform, the herons’ domain stretched before her in ripples of grass and shadow, though the spoonbills remained hidden.
A single cry cracked the hush, and the birds burst upward, wings beating white against deepening gold. Mira crouched, elbows firm on the rail, and the lens captured arc after arc of feathered light. During the final burst of clicks, the zoom focused on something small and metallic near a cluster of roots. Light winked beside the tangled stems; her boots left the platform despite the weight in her legs. Mud sucked at each step until a faded tin box emerged. Its lid resisted, then opened with a sigh, revealing an old brass compass, its needle still quivering. The small compass rested inside her open palm, catching the last stripe of daylight.
