Ten minutes remained; the flavor balanced between plain soup and hesitant promise. She sprinkled roasted pepper, swept the spoon in tight circles, and watched richer color spread. She wished she had noticed that pepper earlier while sorting ingredients at the very beginning of class. If the gadget had worked properly, the soup would have remained thin, lacking the sudden depth now shimmering inside the pot. Bowls lined the counter while an assistant clicked stainless spoons against ceramic edges. When the instructor tasted her serving, her eyebrows arched upward, and several classmates tapped boards in soft applause.
