When Mara finally edged forward, only a smear of dressing remained in the silver bowl. Her shoulders dropped, but participation badges on nearby volunteers signaled more food might appear. A caterer rolled out a second trolley; however, the new bowl landed on a distant table where dancers started to mingle after their routine. By the time she squeezed between twirling sleeves, forks scraped the bottom again. She pulled back, nearly colliding with a trumpet case, and scanned the room a second time. Behind the curtains, a narrow service corridor opened and released a puff of rosemary steam.

A young cook emerged, balancing a small reserve bowl. The cook’s cap tilted, revealing her brother Leo, cheeks flushed from the kitchen heat. Mara’s eyebrows lifted; Leo shrugged, then tipped the bowl toward her as though presenting a quiet trophy.
