Mira waited in the theatre after the last lesson because she wanted a clear audio clip for her class project. The rows of folded chairs formed a narrow corridor toward the stage, and dust hovered in the pale afternoon light. She had already tested three classrooms, yet echoes or traffic always spoiled the sound. The wooden boards on this stage often gave warmer acoustics, so she placed her small recorder near the footlights. Her stance remained unwavering while the red light blinked, and even her breathing slowed. If she had known what else shared the theatre, she would have searched the shadows before pressing the button.

The first minutes passed smoothly until a sudden crack rippled overhead; a loose spotlight cover rattled against metal. She stopped the recording and shifted the microphone under the balcony. When she listened back, faint applause intruded—just rapid drops from a leaky pipe striking backstage buckets. Frustrated, she wrapped a scarf around the bucket rim, believing the cloth would soften each splash. It helped, yet a new scrape rose behind the curtains. A mirror, stored upright, rocked against its frame, sending a warped reflection of the auditorium across the wall. No student walked the corridor outside, so nothing there could explain the noise; still, the mirror trembled like an uneasy witness.

Mira pulled the curtain aside, and a slim ginger cat darted out, tail puffed. The animal disappeared beneath the seats, nudging programs that had been stacked for tomorrow’s assembly. The papers slid and popped, adding fresh interference. She opened a side door to create a silent path outside, yet the cat ignored the gap. Many students would take notice of a stranger attempting to usher them, but the cat only circled and finally curled up on the warm stage lamp. Heat quieted its movements, and the mirror settled at last. Mira restarted the device. Thirty perfect seconds passed, broken by nothing except her own steady heartbeat. Soft afternoon light rested on the recorder.

米拉掀開布幕，一隻瘦長的橘貓竄出，尾巴炸開。牠鑽到座椅下，把為明天集會堆好的節目單推得悉悉簌簌。紙張滑動、擊撞，再度干擾錄音。她打開側門，想提供一條安靜的出口，但貓咪無視那道縫隙。許多學生若看到陌生人招手都會注意，可貓只是在場內兜圈，最後捲縮在溫熱的舞台燈上。熱度讓牠安靜下來，鏡子的顫抖也停了。米拉重新啟動錄音器，三十秒完美無缺，只有她均勻的心跳陪伴。柔和午後的光線停在錄音機上。
