Cylinder on the Wet Stage-

English 原文
Marco had always admired the grey-haired maestro who visited the community hall on Saturdays. During the upcoming talent evening, Marco wanted to surprise him with a homemade instrument. He sliced a cardboard cylinder left from wrapping paper and marked five neat holes. The room smelled of glue while threadbare curtains fluttered under the slow ceiling fan. Marco worked like a young engineer, measuring distances with an old metal ruler. When he blew across the rim, the note rattled instead of floating smoothly. His shoulders dropped, and the cylinder slipped, leaving a faint dent near the mouthpiece. He sanded the edge, painted a thin coat of wax, then tried again. A sharper whistle burst out, yet two bottom notes still wavered like restless sparrows. Outside, the afternoon rain started, drumming unevenly on tin roofing above the hallway. Marco covered the holes with tape pieces, hoping the waterlike vibration would settle. Instead, the tape muffled everything, and silence answered his longest breath.
Evening lights flickered on while folding chairs were being arranged by cheerful neighbours. Marco hurried across the damp stage, carrying the tube and several spare reeds. A puddle near the microphone caught his shoe, tilting his balance unexpectedly. The cylinder slipped again, struck the wooden floor, and split into five separate segments. Gasps rippled through the hall, yet Marco crouched and lifted the scattered pieces quickly. Without thinking, he arranged the fragments by length and blew across the shortest first. A clear, bright tone bounced off the ceiling; the next fragment answered in harmony. Suddenly, the unplanned cluster behaved like a versatile pan-flute, richer than the original design. The maestro tapped his program against a knee, signaling that such raw innovation deserved attention. Marco inhaled, then released a short melody; listeners leaned forward, palms pressed together. If the tube had remained whole, that resonant chord would never have greeted them. Five shining tubes rested on the velvet cloth beneath the cooling stage lights.
