English 原文
Metal chains from the distant swings drummed in uneven beats over the park bench, mixing with brief wing-flutters of pigeons below. Bram pressed six coloured threads onto the armrest; the tape crinkled while he spread them like a tiny fan. A bronze plaque fixed behind the seat vibrated whenever a scooter rolled by. He aimed to knot until the band wrapped a quarter of his wrist before lunch. Nearby, Viola sat on a picnic blanket; her small bamboo utensil clacked inside a fruit cup each time she scooped. Bram pulled a forward knot—creak, stretch—yet the tape loosened at one edge, sliding the whole fan sideways. He shifted his grip and tugged again, but the pattern still sagged.
A passing breeze whisked the loose ends; two similar blues twined, then hid where shadow touched sun. Straightening them, Bram saw that the paler strand had slipped behind the darker one three rows back. If he had kept tying the next row, the chevron would have veered off course and curled like ribbon in water. Rather than undo tight knots, he tilted the loom a few degrees so the wandering colour could travel diagonally on purpose. After every second knot he tapped the growing band against his palm—a quiet ceremony that had turned into tradition among friends. The tape rustled under the new angle, yet the tension spread evenly, and the warped section became a bold zigzag.
The breeze still threatened to lift the fan. Spotting a forgotten quarter near the ground retrieval area, Bram bent, lost tension for one breath, then pinned the coin over the tape’s edge. The metal rang softly each time he tightened a backward knot, but the threads no longer drifted. Rows stacked until the zigzag met his wrist test mark, bright and steady, ready for its future owner. Only the layered hush of grass and far-off swing chains remained.
